Our neighbours to the north are a water sports people!\u00a0 And we have to admit it, they are much more attentive to nature conservation<\/strong> and you will find beautiful historical towns<\/strong>.<\/p>

The various large bodies of water such as Eastern Scheldt, Grevelingen, Haringvliet, Hollands Diep, Volkerak, Veerse Meer are connected by rivers and canals.\u00a0 Although you can’t sail on these routes all the time, the scenery and journey are worth it!<\/strong><\/p>

At several places you have to pass bridges and locks, each trip involves a lot of work beforehand to check the different opening times.\u00a0 These passages are an experience <\/strong>in themselves, each lock is teamwork.<\/p>

This is a destination with less North Sea, much more sheltered inland waterways, so ideal for lovers of quiet work<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The scenario for a round trip Holland: <\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Haringvliet, Hollands Diep, Volkerak, Krammer, Eastern Scheldt,<\/strong>\u00a0back to North Sea via Canal through Zuid Beveland and the Westerschelde. Very nice is 2nd option: Veerse Meer and Canal through Walcheren past Middelburg to Flushing.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Conveniently and what we often plan is starting with a jump to the furthest point: Ostend – Haringvliet<\/strong>: 60-70 miles of North Sea sailing.\u00a0 Beyond the Haringvliet dam, there are two marinas: Stellendam and Hellevoetsluis.<\/p>

Hellevoetsluis<\/strong> has several marinas within walking distance of or in the beautiful city centre.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The Haringvliet<\/strong> is sailing water, past the island of Tiengemeten<\/strong> and of course watch out for drafts!<\/p>

Find out if the big Haringvliet bridge opens!\u00a0 There have been mechanical problems since 2021 that can reportedly drag on for a long time.\u00a0 In some periods, passage is only possible a few times a week.\u00a0 If that poses a problem, we will go up the “Spui” towards the Oude Maas<\/strong> (below Rotterdam) and Dortse Kil<\/strong>.\u00a0 For this route, we again inquire about the opening hours of the various bridges.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

After the bridge or the trip past Rotterdam<\/strong>, Willemstad<\/strong> is a fine stopover on the Hollands Diep<\/strong>!<\/p>

On the Volkerak<\/strong> there are picturesque little harbours, with Elise<\/span>‘s draft of 2.3m they are not for us!<\/p>

The waterway merges seamlessly into the Krammer<\/strong>, we are almost at the Eastern Scheldt.\u00a0 As we sail through the Krammer locks, there is another lock to starboard: to Grevelingen Lake<\/strong>.\u00a0 Immediately after the lock is Bruinisse<\/strong> marina, here is a holiday park and recreational facilities.\u00a0 There are also several yacht supply companies and a shipyard (Halberg-Rassy has its sales harbour here).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

On to the Eastern Scheldt<\/strong> via the Zijpe<\/strong> and the Mastgat<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The entire Eastern Scheldt <\/b>and its surroundings is a National Park<\/b>! We notice this in the landscape. We have ample choice between several picturesque marinas and towns. <\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

If we are in a hurry, we head for Wemeldinge<\/strong>, where the Canal through Zuid-Beveland begins, taking us to Hansweert and the Westerschelde<\/strong>.\u00a0 Along this busy waterway, between large container ships and tankers to the North Sea<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Do we have time?\u00a0 Then there are Goes<\/strong> and Yerseke<\/strong> on the east side of the Zeeland Bridge<\/strong>, are we in time for the bridge opening?\u00a0<\/p>

Zierikzee<\/strong> is worth a stop, time has stood still in its narrow streets and centre.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

You can get from the Eastern Scheldt<\/b> to the North Sea<\/b> in three ways.<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Past the Roompot lock<\/strong> at the storm surge barrier<\/strong> and Neeltje Jans<\/strong>, Elise <\/span>can’t get out!\u00a0 The fixed bridge only has a clearance of 20m, which is too little!<\/p>

We already mentioned the canal through Zuid-Beveland to the Westerschelde.<\/p>

The third option is a very nice one!\u00a0 Through Lake Veere<\/strong>, past the marinas of Wolphaartsdijk<\/strong> and Kortgene<\/strong>, perhaps a stopover at historic Veere<\/strong>?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

After the lock at Veere, the canal through Walcheren<\/strong> begins , back an idyllic cruise to Middelburg<\/strong> and so on to Flushing<\/strong>.\u00a0 Each of the towns we sail before is worth a visit, a choice forces itself upon us, if not we will be on the road for months!<\/p>

After Flushing<\/strong>, we cross the busy Westerschelde<\/strong>, straight to the North Sea<\/strong> and Ostend<\/strong>, unless anyone wants to stop in Breskens<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Too much choice?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Zeeland and the Eastern Scheldt have a lot to offer.\u00a0 Being well prepared and making choices is necessary.<\/p>

A full round trip: Haringvliet, Hollands Diep, Volkerak, Oosterschelde, back to North Sea via Canal through Zuid Beveland and the Westerschelde<\/strong>: count at least four, for safety’s sake five days<\/strong>.<\/p>

If you return via Veerse Meer<\/strong> and Middelburg<\/strong>, you will need five to six days<\/strong>.<\/p>

To the Haringvliet<\/strong> and Hellevoetsluis<\/strong>, back and forth via the North Sea<\/strong> can be done in three days<\/strong>.<\/p>

Flushing, Breskens<\/strong> are at day distance single trip, with some luck Middelburg<\/strong> round trip is feasible on a two-day trip<\/strong>.<\/p>
